## [Animated: Moving Portraits of the Self and Other 2](https://animate.org.uk/editorial/2004/09/animated-moving-portraits-of-the-self-and-other-2/)

**Thursday 16 September 2004 19:00**

The second of three animate! evenings at the National Portrait Gallery, London, exploring portraiture and the dynamic medium of animation. The sessions will showcase some of the most striking, innovative and exploratory works of contemporary international animation. Writer and *Time Out* film critic Gareth Evans will be in discussion with filmmakers and cross-platform commentators to consider the unique way in which animation, the manipulated moving image, investigates and can amplify notions of portraiture.

**Animated: Intimate Encounters?**

Central to this evening is the ebb & flow of the public (or projected) face with the private conception of the self. The animated portrait is revealed to be a far from rigid construct, less a stable arrival than a bold journey into intriguing new ways of seeing.

The artists screening and discussing their work are [Dryden Goodwin](http://www.drydengoodwin.com/) with an extract from his **Reveal** and Run Wrake with [Jukebox](https://animate.org.uk/films/jukebox/); novelist and critic [M John Harrison](http://www.mjohnharrison.com/) talks about Petra Freeman’s [Jumping Joan](https://animate.org.uk/films/jumpingjoan/).

There will be a final film evening at the NPG on 14 October.
