## [Tale of Tales at Curzon Soho London](https://animate.org.uk/editorial/2005/12/tale-of-tales-at-curzon-soho-london/)

**Thursday 19 January 2006 18.00**

Twice voted best animated film of all time. The inspiration for [Michel Gondry](http://www.director-file.com/gondry/bjork1.html)’s [Human Behaviour](http://www.bjork.com/videogallery/) music video which launched [Bjork](http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001951/)’s career. Analysed in [The Guardian](http://film.guardian.co.uk/features/featurepages/0,4120,1460794,00.html) by Booker Prize-winning novelist [AS Byatt](http://www.asbyatt.com/). Now [Yuri Norstein](http://www.acmi.net.au/434671BEB1C7482E819F8D19F7FCF1BF.htm)’s short film **Tale of Tales** is the subject of an entire [book](http://filmjourney.weblogger.com/2005/08/05) written by [Clare Kitson](http://mag.awn.com/index.php?article_no=1163), ex-[Commissioning Editor for Animation](http://www.awn.com/mag/issue4.06/4.06pages/kotlarzch4/kotlarzch4.php3) at Channel 4 (and co-architect of the [animate!](https://animate.org.uk/) project).

[Tale of Tales](http://www.iotacenter.org/program/publication/moritz/moritz20) (USSR 1979 28mins) fuses Norstein’s memories of his past and hopes and fears for the future: his post-war childhood, remnants of personal tragedies of war and the small working-class boy’s longing to emerge from the dark central corridor of the [kommunalka](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kommunalka) into a luminous world of art and poetry.

This event screens a superb 35mm print of the film, followed by a discussion with AS Byatt and Clare Kitson.
